How often should a boat lift be serviced?

A lift in brackish salt air needs inspection roughly twice a year rather than the once-a-year interval common inland, plus a check ahead of hurricane season. Cables, drums, and electrical connections all degrade faster here, and a cable that fails under load takes the cradle — and often the boat — with it.

How often should a boat lift be serviced?

The right interval also depends on how the lift is used — a lift cycled daily sees more wear than one raised and lowered occasionally, and a service schedule should reflect actual use, not just a calendar.

A lift's age matters too, independent of how often it's used — hardware and cables that have already been through several seasons of brackish exposure are closer to the end of their service life than the calendar alone would suggest, which is part of why we weigh a lift's age alongside its use pattern when setting an interval.

What a service visit actually covers

A service visit checks cable condition and tension, drum and gearbox operation under load, motor and switch function, and corrosion at every metal-to-metal connection — cradle bunks, cable terminations, mounting hardware — followed by lubrication and adjustment where the inspection calls for it.

We also check that the lift is still level and raising evenly, since a lift that's drifted slightly out of alignment is easier and cheaper to correct on a routine visit than after it's racked hard enough to damage the cradle.

The dock structure the lift is mounted to gets a look during the same visit, since a lift is only as sound as what it's bolted to — a service visit that only checks the lift's own hardware and ignores the pilings and framing underneath it misses half the picture.

Cable inspection and retirement criteria

Cables are retired on visible wear — fraying, kinking, flat spots, or rust bleed at a termination — and on age, since brackish-water cable life runs shorter than the same cable would see in fresh water regardless of how it looks on the surface. We check terminations under tension, not just by sight, because corrosion inside a fitting often outpaces what shows on the outside.

A cable that's approaching retirement doesn't always look dramatic before it fails; that's the reason for a fixed inspection schedule rather than waiting for visible damage to prompt a call.

Corrosion control on hardware and electrical

Corrosion control means keeping dissimilar metals isolated at every connection, replacing hardware before rust bleed turns into section loss, and treating electrical connections as consumable items on this coast rather than fit-once-and-forget components.

Sacrificial anodes, correctly specified stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware, and dielectric protection at electrical connections all extend service life meaningfully — the incremental cost of doing this right at each service visit is small next to the cost of a cable or motor failure.

Off-season and pre-storm checks

Ahead of hurricane season, a lift check focuses on cable and connection integrity under the loads a storm can add — wind and wave action on a raised boat puts real stress on a lift that normal daily use doesn't. After a storm, the same components get checked again before the lift goes back into regular use.

Off-season, when a boat may sit on the lift for weeks at a time, the check shifts toward whether the structure is holding steady load well rather than cycling it — a different kind of wear than daily raising and lowering.

A boat left raised through a full hurricane season is also more exposed to wind loading than one that's stored elsewhere for the worst of it — worth weighing against the lift's own rated capacity for sustained wind load, not just its lifting capacity.
